Every homeowner in that situation is doing the same thing. They are standing in a cold kitchen with a phone in their hand, searching "furnace repair near me," and tapping the first few results. On a normal Tuesday, a slow site loses you a trickle of visitors who get bored and bounce. During a cold snap or a heat wave, when every contractor in the map pack is getting hammered with the same searches at the same time, a slow site loses you the exact leads that would have been the easiest, highest-intent calls of the month.
Those callers are not browsing. They already have a problem and they are ready to book. The only question is which of the four or five sites they tap actually loads fast enough to let them do it, and which of those sites has an emergency page built to close the deal once they land.
What is actually slowing your site down
Most of the slowness on contractor websites comes from a small handful of repeat offenders.
Oversized images. A photo straight off a phone camera can be four or five megabytes, and a site with a dozen full-resolution job photos loading on one page will crawl on mobile data. Every image on the site should be compressed and resized to the dimensions it actually displays at, not the dimensions the camera captured.
Too many third-party scripts. Chat widgets, tracking pixels, review badges, and font libraries all add a script that has to load before the page is usable. Each one seems small on its own, but a site running six or seven of them stacks up fast, and a surprising number of contractor sites are running tools nobody actually looks at anymore.
Heavy page builders and bloated themes. Some website platforms generate a mountain of code to render a simple page, because the builder is optimized for flexibility, not speed. That trade-off is invisible until someone opens the site on a three-year-old phone with one bar of signal, which describes a large share of the people searching for emergency HVAC service.
No caching or a slow host. If every visitor triggers a fresh build of the page from scratch, and the server answering that request is cheap and overloaded, speed problems show up no matter how clean the front end is. This one is invisible to a contractor looking at their own site on a fast office connection, and it is exactly the kind of problem a full page audit catches.
How to check where you actually stand
You do not need to guess, and you do not need to hire anyone to get a first read.
Google's PageSpeed Insights tool is free and will score both your mobile and desktop performance, then list the specific things slowing the page down. Run it on your homepage and on whatever page you send emergency traffic to, since those are not always the same page and they do not always perform the same. Pay closest attention to the mobile score, not desktop, because most emergency HVAC searches happen on a phone, often on cellular data rather than home wifi.

What to actually fix, in order
Fixing speed does not require a full site rebuild in most cases.
- Compress and resize every image on the site, especially job photos and hero banners
- Remove or delay any third-party script that is not directly earning its place, starting with unused chat widgets and old tracking pixels
- Confirm the hosting plan is built for the traffic the site actually gets, particularly during seasonal spikes
- Re-test the emergency and service pages specifically, not just the homepage, since those carry the highest-intent traffic
- Re-run PageSpeed Insights after each change to confirm it actually moved the number
Speed improvements compound with everything else the site is trying to do.
A faster emergency service page converts more of the traffic it already gets, and Google's own ranking systems increasingly weigh page speed as one signal among many for which contractor shows up first for furnace repair searches. None of that matters if the visitor never sees the page in the first place, and a slow load on a cold morning is exactly how a contractor with better service than the competition still loses the call to a worse company with a faster site.
